Bombs, weapons seized, two arrested near Salem
Salem: The Salem police on Tuesday afternoon arrested two men of a gang who were armed with deadly weapons. Country-made bombs, machetes, bundles of gutka, a two-wheeler and a car was seized from them.
On Tuesday afternoon, Karumalai Koodal station Inspector S. Gnanasekar and his team of police personnel were involved in vehicle check in the Kunchaadiyur junction near Mettur in Salem district.
On suspicion, the police team stopped a person coming in a car, and simultaneously also another person on a bike. When they questioned them, both gave contradictory statements.
Subsequently, the police team inspected the car and found country-made bombs, machetes and bundles of gutka.
Police after enquiry, identified the occupant of the car as rowdy-sheeter Arulselvan alias Murugan, aged about 39 years, of Kunchaadiyur. The bike rider was identified as Govindharaj (30) of Illampally.
On continued grilling, Arulselvan told the police that his friend, also another rowdy Aravindhan from Kunchaadiyur and his father Kalaivannan had cheated and usurped his property. Hence, he was on his way to murder Aravindshan and his father Kalaivanan.
Arulselvan also told the police that he had brought Govindaraj with him to carry the weapons, to help in the murder. The gutka stocks were meant to be sold and Arulselvam wanted to make money out of it.
Police arrested both Arulselvan and Govindaraj and seized 12 country-made bombs, eight machetes, `1.5 lakh worth of gutka, three two-wheelers and a car, all totaling
`5 lakh worth materials were seized. Police are also searching for the mentors behind the murder plot.
It is understood that the two are part of a gang which was involved in several cases of murder, robbery and other criminal activities.
Police are trying to get to the depths of the crime and the criminal links that these two persons have in regard to various other cases.
Seizure of such large amount of weapons, especially at a time when the elections are closely approaching, have sent shock waves in the region. Investigations are underway.
