At Hennur, it is a dirt track for motorists

The Hennur flyover project that finally saw the light of the day after eight years in March, has not improved the traffic flow in Hennur.

The road from Hennur to Nagawara is in a pathetic condition, posing a serious risk to motorists. The local residents have raised the issue numerous times, but BBMP has not done anything in this regard. Though the Hennur flyover was thrown open after much delay, it has done little to ease the traffic. With the monsoon already setting in, the residents wonder how they are going to cope with flooded and slippery roads

Bengaluru: The election is over and the ministerial berths have been allotted to the candidates, but there is no sign of citizens’ aspiration of a better infrastructure getting fulfilled in near future.

The Hennur-Nagawara stretch of road is in a pathetic condition and despite alerting the corporator last year about the potholes no initiative was taken to repair it.

“The condition of the road in Hennur reflects the government's lack of respect for our lives. They have ignored the risk potholes and bumpy roads pose to motorists, in order to satisfy their own greed. Is this why citizens pay tax, to travel on unsafe roads?” said Sunita Iyer, a resident.

The Hennur flyover project that finally saw the light of the day after eight years in March, has not improved the traffic flow in Hennur.

Once the vehicles passing through the flyover join the traffic underneath, and given poor condition of the road, motorists have a tough time navigating this stretch.

“Monsoon has already set in and the state of our roads has exposed government's unpreparedness. If officials don't act now to provide safe roads & rebuild our crumbling infrastructure, we are unfortunately staring at a city beyond repair,” Sunita remarked.

The residents have alleged that though complaints have been raised with the BBMP, the civic body has not made any effort to ease the woes of residents.

The residents complain there is no sign of asphalted road, but a stretch covered with mud.

Their another allegation was that though the Palike promptly built a road to cater to the residents of a newly-constructed apartment, but nothing has been done to improve the condition of the main road for more than a year.

S.K. Mohit, another Hennur resident, said, “Every time one or the other civic agency digs up the road and covers it with debris. It is impossible for anybody to walk on a mud road. Imagine what would be the condition of the locality when it rains, the entire area will be inundated.”

One of the shining examples of the BBMP’s shoddy job is the work done at one of the storm water drains (SWD) where pebbles have been put around it. During heavy downpour sewage overflows and enters residential compounds.

Interview with Mayor Sampath Raj
Pothole filling work on, will be finished soon, says Mayor Sampath Raj

The Hennur stretch is in a bad condition. What is the Palike planning to do?
I have received a lot of complaints from the residents of Hennur and Hegde Nagar. We are at it and prime importance will be given to these areas.

How many potholes have been identified?
We have identified over 3000 potholes and the work to repair them has already begun. The job will be completed soon.

Is there any special mix you are going to use to fill the potholes?
No, it is going to be the normal asphalting work. We will not use any special mix.
