Hyderabad: The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has taken note of pollution of the Peacock Lake at the University of Hyderabad. The PMO has written to TS Chief Secretary S.N. Singh, asking him to look into the matter, take appropriate action and upload a report on the Centre’s online portal.

The PMO sent the Chief Secretary a letter dated August 25 following a complaint filed on the government’s public grievance portal by PhD student Ravi Jillapalli. The complaint received a response from not only the PMO but also from Union minister Dr Harsh Vardhan.

Pollution of the lake has been a problem for nearly a decade. Sewage is disposed into the Peacock Lake, which supports a variety of species. The problem has got aggravated over the past few years due to setting up of more establishments.

In his petition, Mr Jillapalli said, “We are hoping some action will be taken on this issue as it is endangering the biodiversity in the protected forest area of the varsity. The administrators of the University of Hyderabad must answer as to how they allowed such a big drain to run across the campus in the first place.”

The five establishments from which the sewage is entering the lake are to meet with the GHMC, the Sports Authority of Telangana and the HMDA to discuss the issue. “The University has been writing to the authorities to stop the flow of sewage into the lake. We are glad that outside agencies have taken note of the issue and decided to help us,” the official spokesperson of the University.
