VTU student death: Shocked family alleges cover-up

Somashekhar Makkalgeri, a second year MBA student and hailing from Bailhongal, died at VTU campus due to exhaustion during a workout.

Belagavi: The shocked family of Somashekhar Makkalgeri, an MBA student who died on the VTU campus on October 3, has demanded an investigation alleging that attempts were being made to hush up the case.

Somashekhar Makkalgeri, a second year MBA student and hailing from Bailhongal, died at VTU campus due to exhaustion during a workout. He used to regularly do exercises and was preparing for a competitive examination.

In a complaint to Belagavi police commissioner, the student's maternal uncle and guardian, Mallappa Rajagatti, said he had raised Somashekhar and got him good education ever since he lost his mother in childhood. Somashekhar and his two sisters were raised by Rajagatti since their childhood as Somashekhar's father Siddaramappa Makkalageri is mentally unstable and not in a position to take care of his family.

When VTU authorities informed Somashekhar's family about his death, Rajagatti said, he rushed to KLE Hospital in Belagavi the body was taken by VTU officials on October 3.

“When I was taken into the mortuary of KLE Hospital, I noticed blood stains in his ear and mouth. When I asked reasons for his death and injuries, VTU officials present at the hospital said they already informed Somashekhar's father. The VTU officials did not provide the post-mortem report to the family and said, they already informed everything to his father,”' he said.

“In a hurry, the VTU officials decided to take his body to Gajamanal, my hometown and in the presence of entire family his body was buried in my fields',” he said. Rajagatti said he was prevented by VTU officials from lodging a case with the police.
