Hyderabad: Roads get hall of shame page on Facebook

Residents can post worst stretches that require immediate repairs; Association will liaise with GHMC.

Hyderabad: Miffed with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for ignoring roads other than those in Hitech City, the United Federat-ion of Residents Welfare Association has started a Facebook page called ‘Roads of Hyderabad — Best & Worst.’ Citizens can post pictures and names of roads that need immediate repairs and these will be surveyed by UFERWAS and the Engineering Staff College of India and their report will be forwarded to the GHMC’s Engineering wing. Since the GHMC complains of a shortage of staff, it can save time on inspecting the roads and forward the complaint to the concerned circle for execution.

“It’s the internal roads of colonies that the UFERWAS (United Federation of RWAs) will highlight. Residents must identify the worst stretches and list at least three roads (not exceeding 100 metres) which require immediate attention, said the vice president of U-FERWAS, major Shiva Kiran. The required details must include landmarks or latitude/longitude or location using Bhuvan/ Google maps. The list will then be compiled on a daily basis and physically-inspected by a team comprising UFERWAS members and officials of technical institutions. A priority list of road repairs will be prepared and sent to GHMC for execution.

“GHMC authorities have assured us that they will take up the work. The UFERWAS team will monitor the progress and report to the GHMC commissioner,” adds Maj. Shiva Kiran. Citizens are being requested to list the good roads too so that GHMC does not repair these again. Suggestions to improve the methodology are welcome and volunteers may contact the UFERWAS team.

The FB page received a few complaints on the day it was launched. A resident of Greenlands wrote: ‘Worst Roads- Greenlands Junction to Meenabazar extension, between metro pillars BAP 8-10, 17, Methodist Colony.’ Another ‘worst’ road mentioned was the stretch from GHMC Lotus Pond to Omega Hospital -Banjara hills road number 12/2. Road stretch from GHMC Lotus Pond to Press Photographers Colony entrance. Comp-laints were also made about RCI Road/airport road; Chinthalkunta checkpost-Sagar Ring Road stretch, and Uppal ring road-Boduppal stretch.
