Kodagu peaceful, no private Tipu Sultan celebration
Mysuru: With the BJP government cancelling government organised celebrations of Tipu Jayanthi, Kodagu district remained peaceful on Sunday.
Even Muslim community leaders restrained themselves from organising large scale celebrations in Kodagu as agreed to at the Peace meet called by the Kodagu district administration. But leaders of pro-Hindu organisations offered puja at Omkareswara temple in Madikeri in memory of VHP leader Kuttappa who died during the Tipu Jayanthi related riots in Madikeri in 2015.
The police permitted Eid Milad processions, with Muslim community members offering prayers in mosques and taking out processions at 36 places in Kodagu which went off peacefully.
The Kodagu police was on a high alert and had taken all precautionary measures since the past one week. They had held meetings with community leaders at the police station level with the leaders agreeing to maintain peace and not celebrate Tipu Jayanthi even at private functions.
Kodagu SP Dr Suman D Pennekar said ,“The situation remained completely peaceful in Kodagu both on Saturday and Sunday.”
In Mysuru, former minister, Congress MLA and chairperson of Hazrath Tipu Sultan Saheed Wakf Estate, Mr Tanveer Sait has approached the high court against the Mysuru district administration for not permitting private celebrations of Tipu Jayanthi at Bannimantap grounds of MUDA. They plan to do it in Mysuru if the judgement permits it.
However Mr Sait paid tribute at the tomb of 18th century ruler Tipu Sultan to mark his 227 birth anniversary at Gumbaz in Srirangapatna in Mandya district along with several other leaders and members of the Muslim community.
