World Telugu Fest gets Olympic touch
Hyderabad: Cultural torch relays from the state’s districts reaching LB Stadium, the main venue of World Telugu Conference (WTC), will mark the opening of the first ever five-day literary and cultural event in Telangana on December 15. The relays will be held along the lines of the Olympic torch runs.
Each torch rally will begin from the birthplace of well-known Telugu literary giants such as Pothana, Dasaradhi Rangacharya, C. Narayan Reddy, Palkuriki Somanatha, amongst others.
The relays are aimed at creating awareness on the conference and making people aware of the rich cultural heritage of Telugu language and literature. The cabinet sub-committee, constituted by Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao to review the arrangements for WTF, has cleared the proposal to hold cultural torch rallies.
The sub-committee, headed by Deputy CM Kadiam Srihari, has asked the district collectors to make arrangements for the torch runs in their respective districts. This plan was proposed by Jangoan collector A. Devasena in the video conference held by the cabinet sub-committee with the district collectors.
The sub-committee was impressed by her proposal and asked other collectors to identify birthplaces of literary personalities in their respective districts. A few collectors have already submitted the proposals.
Jangaon district has proposed to hold the torch relay from Palakurthy, the birthplace of Palkuriki Somanatha, a noted Telugu writer of the 12th century, who holds credit for bringing poetry to the doorstep of the common man.
Mr Kadiam Srihari said, “Such torch relays will inspire people to pursue Telugu literature. It will also encourage students to learn and speak Telugu.”
