Phase II metro to reach interiors too
CHENNAI: A Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Chennai Metro Rail’s phase two covering 100 km, under preparation, will be completed by June, according to CMRL sources. Soil testing for the sites, which began two months ago to finalise the underground and elevated sites, is on. The stretch will connect Madhavaram to Siruseri, Madhavaram to Sholinganallur and CMBT to Light House. According to a senior official, the aim now will be to connect not only the major areas but interior locations and suburbs too.
“Areas like T Nagar, Nungambakkam and IT Corridor, will not be overlooked and will soon see metro connectivity,” he added. Once the DPR for phase two is ready, the Centre will be approached for design approval. Phase one of metro rail in the next two to three months, will see trial runs on the Little Mount to Chennai Airport and St Thomas Mount to Alandur stretches, another official confirmed. The trial runs will involve officials from Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) who will do inspection. The track will then become operational in six months. Currently, work on the underground stretch from Koyambedu to Nehru Park, via Anna Nagar, is going on in full swing.
