Telangana High Court dismisses bail plea of murder accused

Hyderabad: The bail application of an accused in the ‘honour’ killing of Hemanth Avanthi was dismissed by the Telangana High Court on Wednesday. The petitioner, Kaila Sandeep Reddy, claimed he was framed by the police and that he had only visited Avanthi’s residence for deliberations, unaware of others’ murder plan. However, the public prosecutor contended that the vehicle used in the crime belonged to Reddy and that call records indicated his role in the crime.

T. Swetcha, counsel for Avanthi’s wife, contended that Reddy and others abducted Avanthi and handed him to hired assassins. “The accused in the case threatened the father of the deceased, who was one of the material witnesses, to not to depose against them in the trial court. Many witnesses have turned hostile and enlarging the petitioner on bail would cause grave harm to the trial,” Swetcha said, following which Justice C. Sumalatha observed that bail was not feasible and dismissed the plea.

Justice C. Sumalatha of the Telangana High Court on Wednesday dismissed a petition seeking anticipatory bail filed in a case under POCSO Act. The petition was filed by a Medchal-Malkajgiri district resident, who is the maternal aunt of the rape victim. The woman, who is also named an accused, used to host the 16-year-old victim at her house during her holidays, when her son is alleged to have raped and impregnated the girl. Upon getting to know of the pregnancy, the woman and her husband allegedly got her an abortion without her parents’ knowledge. Taking into account the severity of the crime, the court denied bail.
