Hyderabad: The scorching sun blazed bright across Telangana state on Wednesday, causing mercury levels to shoot up, with some places recording temperatures of over 44 degrees Celsius (°C) on the day.
As many as 32 districts of the state were put under orange alert as the temperature crossed 40°C, with Nizamabad topping the charts at 44.4°C, as per the TS Development and Planning Society. Nirmal and Peddapalli districts completed the set of three hottest districts, recording maximum temperatures of 44.3°C and 43.9°C, respectively, on the day.
Hyderabad, meanwhile, was the only district in the state to be put under yellow alert, recording a maximum temperature of 39.4°C.
The India Meteorological Department said that dry weather will persist in the state, due to a trough discontinuity from east Vidarbha to coastal Karnataka, across Marathwada and interior Karnataka, at 0.9 km above mean sea level, coupled with mainly low-level south-easterlies prevailing over Telangana state.
Mahesh Palawat, vice president of meteorology and climate Change, Skymet Weather, told Deccan Chronicle: “For Telangana, weather systems have subsided and we may not expect any significant weather activity in the near future since there is no weather system developing over Bay of Bengal or Telangana or any nearby states. Weather will go dry and temperatures will increase by 2-3 degrees (Celsius) and hot weather conditions will prevail in the state throughout the month of April.”
Palawat further said that there might be isolated pre-monsoon for a short duration in the state, which will not be effective in bringing down the temperature. Also, temperatures would be near-normal and marginally above normal (between 40°C and 45°C), with a possibility of isolated heatwaves in April.
The IMD’s orange alert for 32 districts is for three days, with the temperature set to remain between 41°C and 45°C. Ranga Reddy, Hyderabad, Sangareddy, Yadadri and Medak are expected to have a maximum of 36°C-40°C.
Light to moderate rains or thundershowers are likely to occur at isolated places in the next two days, post which the weather will continue to be dry, the IMD said.
For the next 48 hours, the city will have mainly clear sky during the day and partly cloudy sky towards evening. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 39°C and 24°C, respectively.
