Kozhikode: Tribal library set to scale new heights
KOZHIKODE: A few youngsters have joined hands to take the tribal library at Attappady to greater heights to provide a knowledge sharing environment to the children there.
Besides books, it will have a good collection of movies, documentaries and research materials.
“We dream to make it a library-cum-research centre. Anybody from outside should be possible to come here, stay and study about Attappady. The umpteen research works on the tribal life and infant deaths of the area would also be preserved,” says library secretary V.N. Shanish.
Library president S. Radhamani and K. Jasim are the other two who are sweating it out for the project. It has received preliminary affiliation of the state library council. The library which started off one-and-a-half-years back is functioning temporarily in AHADS (Attappady Hills Area Development Society) building. More than 4,000 books, 3,000 e-journals and 1 TB collection of movies are in the library. “The software to make use of the e-book is under process. As of now, we have only a single computer with internet facility,” explained Mr Shanish.
The library is expecting 100-odd children from the five ‘Oorus’ nearby and students from the Government Arts and Science Coll-ege and IHRD college at Attappady.
Though any person above 18 can also become a member of the library according to the library council rule, the tribal library has set a separate section for children.
The Student Transf-ormation and Empow-erment Programme (STEP) is a facility envisioned to help and guide tribal students to avail of various government programmes and scholarships.
The organisers have kickstarted a book collection drive from acr-oss the state and books and other research materials are pouring into Attappady.
