Bengaluru: Potholes galore in posh Koramangala!

Residents complain that the quality of road repairs is poor and lasts for just a few months.

BENGALURU: The condition of most roads in upscale Koramangala is poor and the ongoing drain repair works at many places have added to the misery of motorists. During heavy showers the drains get clogged and roads are inundated. Residents also complain that the quality of road repairs is poor and lasts for just a few months.

According to the accident statistics released by the city traffic police, there have been 2,100 cases of road accidents, out of which 263 were fatal. Though Koramangala is considered a posh locality, the condition of roads leaves a lot to be desired.

Residents complain that the repairs carried out by civic authorities hardly last. They also point out that they are too late in taking up pre-monsoon work. They now fear that the dug up areas would get waterlogged during rain.

Sudhindra, who works for a multi-national bank, said, “Nearly, all the signals at Koramangala have roads riddled with potholes. The patches filled by the civic authorities do not last even for six months. Last week, the authorities filled the areas but more needs to be done”.

The commuters face a harrowing time while traversing through Koramangala 4th Block where the debris of the ongoing construction has not been cleared.

A day after a deluge recently, the broken concrete slabs of the drains, which run under the footpath, led to the clogging of drains and roads got inundated.

“Recently, the authorities took up drain repair work around Koramangala, which is not a good idea. It seems nothing has been planned. The worst part is that most of the work remains incomplete,” said Jayasimha, a techie.

On being asked if he has ever complained to the authorities concerned, the disgruntled techie remarked, “We have complained to Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) and even at the ministerial level, but little has been done. During peak hours, it takes me almost 40 minutes to come out of my locality in order to reach my office. During heavy showers, the drain overflows”.

Rohit Kumar Baruah, a student residing in Koramangala 8th Block for the past four years, is annoyed with the way the potholes and open drains have been left unattended by the authorities.

“It is impossible to navigate near Kormanagala Police Station and Bethany High School. A few months ago, roads near my residence were in such a pathetic condition that my parents were apprehensive to give me a vehicle. Though roads near 8th Block are quite good, there are several lanes and alleys around Koramangala which need serious attention of the civic authorities,” Baruah said.

One can only hope that the civic authorities ponder over filling up of potholes and complete the pre-monsoon cleaning work before the city comes under wet spells.

It will take 20 more days to fix potholes: M. Chandrappa Corporator

Why little attention is being paid to the pothole-riddled roads of Koramangala?
The condition of roads has worsened because of the sewerage work undertaken by the BWSSB. We have initiated the process to fill potholes and it will take another 20 days to complete the work. The funds have already been sanctioned.

Almost half the roads in Koramangala 4th Block have been covered with debris resulting in huge traffic congestion. When will the work get over?
Look, I understand that shifting has to be done before the rains. We will clear the debris as soon as possible. The drainage work will take another 40 days to get finished.

Can’t the government put up a board where the details regarding initiation and completion of the work, and the funds allocated to the project be put up? It will help the residents know about the work being undertaken.
Yes, it should have been done and we will definitely come up with it. Right now, we are waiting for the immediate completion of the work undertaken by the BWSSB so that the work related to the filling of potholes can be taken up.
