More AP districts before local polls
Hyderabad: AP Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy wants to reorganise the 13 districts in the state before the zilla parishad elections, one of his poll promises. He discussed the measure with party leaders a couple of days ago, sources said.
Mr Reddy plans to create a district out of each of the 25 Lok Sabha constituencies, thereby nearly doubling the number of districts. This he feels will lead to governance at the doorstep.
It is expected that the delimitation of Assembly constituencies will be done by the 2024 elections, taking the number of seats from 175 to 225. He does not want to wait till then to redraw the district boundaries along the lines of Assembly seats.
Those close to Mr Reddy told him that the panchayat raj elections are due, and it would help accommodate more leaders politically if the districts were reorganised before the polls.
Besides, Mr Reddy had promised to name Krishna district N.T. Rama Rao. It is likely that Machilipatnam will be renamed after NTR because his village Nimma-kuru falls in the Gudivada Assembly segment of the Machilipatnam Lok Sabha seat. There are demands to rename Anantapur district as Puttaparthi, Madanapalle instead of Rajampet.
