Cauvery dispute: Rationed tanker water from December?

With govt releasing Cauvery water to TN, BWSSB cautions that Bengaluru will face acute shortage

BENGALURU: With the state government releasing Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, despite the levels in dams being low, the BWSSB has cautioned that from December, the city will have to face rationing and also supply through tankers. A senior official of the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) said, “BWSSB now supplies water to 9.13 lakh connections every alternate day. But after December, based on the availability of water, we may have to reduce the frequency. We may release water once a week. If the condition becomes very critical, we may have to stop the piped water and supply water in tankers to consumers.”

Mr Tushar Girinath, Chairman, BWSSB tweeted, “Since drought condition is prevailing in Cauvery basin, there is minimum inflow into the reservoirs in the month of August and September. Enough Cauvery water may not be available in the coming months. As the rainfall is meager, BWSSB requests all its consumers to consume and use water judiciously.”

Mr S. Kemparamaiah, Chief Engineer, BWSSB, said, “We have already written to the state government not to reduce the share allotted for drinking purpose at any cost. Water levels in the dams are falling, but we are expecting the situation to improve with rains in the Cauvery catchment area in the near future.”
