Hyderabad: The Telangana state government and police personnel, who were part of the 'encounter' of the four accused in the gang rape and murder of Disha, will face a tough legal battle as petitions calling them to account are being filed every day.
Soon after the 'encounter', the government and policemen were praised by members of the public and even legislators who should have known better, who declared that justice has been done. A better sense of what such extra-judicial killings mean emerged with time and human rights activists, professors, advocates and others have approached the High Court with petitions saying that justice has not been served but has been scrapped.
Since the day of the encounter, five PILs have been filed before the Telangana High Court. On Wednesday, former professor of Osmania University, Rama Shankarnarayana Melkote, filed another PIL, seeking an investigation into the encounter by an independent investigation agency from outside the Telugu states, and sought directions to register the case against the police under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.
In the petition, she says she is worried that such an encounter seems to promote retributive culture of justice, of an eye for an eye variety, and said this culture would erode faith in the due process of law.
