Jallikattu protests target Puducherry LG Kiran Bedi
Puducherry: Supporters of jallikattu continued with their protests on Thursday in Puducherry urging that the bull taming sport be allowed.
Hundreds of people, including students, youngsters, social activists and volunteers of different Tamil organisations staged a human chain agitation in the beach road here demanding the withdrawal of the ban on jallikattu before Pongal festival.
The agitators raised slogans against Peta (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) and urged the Supreme Court to allow them to conduct jallikattu. Tension prevailed as a group of agitators who participated in the human chain picketed the Raj Bhavan, the official residence of Lt Governor Kiran Bedi to protest against her remarks on jallikkattu. Ms Bedi, at a function in Chennai, had stated jallikattu should not be allowed since, both the bulls and the humans participating in the sport would get hurt. The protesters sat outside the Raj Bhavan criticising the Lt Governor besides raising slogans against her remarks.
Police personnel were deployed at the gates of the Raj Bhavan. They gate remained closed. Police intervened as the agitators tried to enter Raj Bhavan. Police officials held talks with the agitators and removed them from the spot.
