Laity puts the onus on bishop
Kozhikode: Thamarassery diocese bishop Remegiose Inchananiyil is responsible for the destruction of the cemetery at Little Flower church, Pushpagiri, as none would dare dig out the dead without his consent. This charge has been raised by Catholic Laymen's Association Koodaranji unit, the believers' body.
The statements of the diocese spokesperson that the decision for translocation of the bodies and selling the land of Little Flower church, Pushpagiri, to the mining lobby was taken by the parish council is a lie, CLA Koodaranji unit president Johnny Paul said. Without the concurrence of the bishop such action was not possible, he pointed out.
The Church authorities are misusing the parish bodies as a tool to cover up their crimes and escape the wrath of a section of devotees, he alleged.
The Koodaranji village officer had submitted a report to the district administration saying, "the granite quarry in the land owned by the Little Flower church, Pushpagiri, where tombs were broke open and bodies were smuggled out during night, had been operating illegally violating the safety and explosive rules and posing a threat to public life."
The report was a sequel to a complaint submitted to the district collector by the relatives of the missing bodies demanding justice.
The suspicious activities of the Church authorities underline the allegations raised by various quarters that a massive mining project is in the pipeline in the area. The report also recommended more probes into various other aspects, including loss to the state exchequer and the illegal activities that took place near the quarry in the recent past, the report said.
