44 LI schemes to be modernised
Khammam/Kothagudem: The state government will spend Rs 12 crore to modernise 44 lift irrigation schemes in Khammam and Kothagudem districts before next kharif, as part of the third phase of Mission Kakatiya.
Though all these schemes have water, the authorities haven’t been able to supply it to the tail-end lands. After modernisation, an additional 2.700 acres will be supplied water, officials said.
Thanks to renovation and rejuvenation of tanks under Mission Kakatiya, water levels have increased. There are 131 lift irrigation schemes in the two districts that help irrigate about 43,000 acres are being irrigated. However, 51 of these schemes have been identified as “non-functional” and another 54 “partially functional”.
Because of this, farmers had shifted to irrigating dry crops from paddy in 9,000 acres. Officials said that the government is considering rejuvenating these non-functioning schemes one by one.
