Centre restores 36 PG seats in college

The 36 PG seats were cancelled due to lack of infrastructure and faculty in the college.

Hyderabad: Thirty-six post-graduate seats in Government Nizamia Tibbi College, which were cancelled in May 2019, have been restored by the central ministry of AYUSH by giving conditional permission.

The 36 PG seats were cancelled due to lack of infrastructure and faculty in the college.

Dr Abul Hasan Ashraf, member of Government Nizamia Tibbi College and Hospital Development Society explained, “The central ministry of AYUSH has again asked the members of the medical board to carry out inspection and it was found that the minimum requirements for the course have been met by the college. Keeping this in mind, conditional permission has been granted to the college.”

Conditional permission will allow the college to admit students for the post-graduate course for the academic year 2019-20 only. The requirements have to be fulfilled to ensure that the students get adequate training and are able to properly carry out research.

The college has had post- graduate courses since its inception in 1972 and this was the first time that the seats had been cancelled.

The college has to now follow up with the state AYUSH department and ensure that the infrastructure and faculty requirements are met so that the permission can be fully restored.

The report of the cancellation of the seats was published in this newspaper on May 28, 2019 and there was anger amongst Unani doctors who felt that the oldest college teaching the alternative stream of medicine was not being given a fair hearing. The doctors urged the central government and the medical council to give them a hearing and it was decided to give conditional permission to the college.
