Salem: Class 7 girl commits suicide after being accused of theft

The teacher, Ms. Leena had kept Rs 600 in her hand bag and this had gone missing on Tuesday.

Salem: A class-7 girl student at government middle school at Aricipalayam near Edappadi, committed suicide on Wednesday, allegedly as a teacher rebuked her suspecting her involvement in a theft. The teacher, Ms. Leena had kept Rs 600 in her hand bag and this had gone missing on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, after an enquiry with the students, the teacher came to a conclusion that the victim T. Vasanthi (12) had stolen the money.

When Vasanthi reached the school as usual on Wednesday morning, the teacher scolded her for stealing the money, which Vasanthi denied.

Aggrieved and depressed over this, Vasanthi told the teacher that she was going to commit suicide and began to run. The teachers, students and other school staff chased her to prevent her from taking the extreme step, but Vasanthi jumped into a nearby well.

Coming to know about this, the victim’s parents and relatives stormed the school and held a dharna there demanding the arrest of the teacher. The cops pacified the agitating crowd and promised action against the teacher and took Leena for enquiry. Investigations are on.
