Kochi: Veterans ready for the kill at athletic meet
Kochi: Savithri Amma, 84, is busy preparing for yet another stellar show at the all-Kerala senior citizen athletic meet to be held here on November 17.
The native of Netoor was the ‘best performing athlete’ in the inaugural edition of the event held last year.
“I’m confident of putting up a good performance this time, too, and looking forward to the D-day," she quips even as she proudly shows the three gold medals that she had won last time.
The second edition of the meet for the elderly (above 60 years) will be held on November 17 at the Maharaja’s College Sacred Heart College, Thevara.
A total of 14 items across eight categories have been included in the second edition of the event organised by the Cochin Corporation, IMA Cochin and NGO MAGICS with the support of the Athletics Association.
“We expect over 500 senior citizen to participate in the competitions. So far, the senior-most competent registered with us is Savithri Amma,” said Dr Praveen Pai of MAGICS.
He said regular physical activities and exercises are the key to good health as age advances. “The event is being held to promote healthy and active ageing,” he said.
And Savithri Amma is all expectations. “I wake up at 5 am and devote the next one hour for exercise, mainly walking and stretching. I also make it a point to prepare the breakfast for my family myself. Keeping oneself busy is one way of active ageing," Savithri Amma reveals her secret.
