More mobile fish marts in Kollam
Kollam: The Matsyafed has increased the number of mobile fish marts in Kollam considering its widespread acceptance. The department initiated the programme 'Anthipacha' last week with a view to providing toxin-free fish to public.
The mobile fish mart was introduced on December 1 to provide fish in the areas starting from Kundara, Elamballoor, Karikkode, Link Road, Collectorate junction and the Kollam beach. This has now been expanded to Mukhathala, Kanannalloor, Decent Junction and Anchal. Special vehicles have been arranged to supply fish to these selling spots in case the stock is expired.
The fish from a processing centre at Sakthikulangara run by the Matsyafed is sold to the public through the mobile mart. It also sells ready to cook fish cutlets, prawn chammandi, and fish pickles. Instant fish curry powder by Matsyafed is also available in these mobile fish marts.
Matsyafed collects fish from Fishermen development and welfare co-operative societies operating at Kollam Port, Vadi harbour, Saktikulangara, Neendakara, and Azheekal. The mobile marts also deliver lake fish procured from inland fishermen in Sambranikkodi, Kanjirode, and Anchalumoodu who depend on Ashtamudi Lake for fishing.
The project helps people purchase fish for reasonable price as the middlemen are avoided in the distribution chain. The fish is also free from toxic preservatives.
