In a first, Tirupur to host jallikattu
TIRUPUR: A Tirupur-based people's forum, ‘Alagumalai Jallikattu Bulls Welfare Association’, has announced they would organise jallikattu in Tirupur for the first time as part of the traditional ‘Pongal’ festivities this year.
The jallikattu is scheduled to be held at Alagumalai near Tirupur on February 4 and the foundation stone for the function venue would be shortly laid by the president of the Alagumalai Temple Trust, Mr. KPM Chinnu Gounder.
According to the organisers, the jallikattu is planned on a big scale as part of measures to protect domestic bull breeds and also to create awareness on organic farming with the help of indigenous bulls.
Since Kangayam bull, which is native of Kangayam in Tirupur district, is being protected by the region for long traditionally, the organisers felt that jallikattu would have to conducted in Kongu region too.
The forum took part in various agitations last year to support the statewide agitation by youths and public demanding to lift the ban on jallikattu.
