JNU ripples felt in Osmania University, 18 students held for protest
Hyderabad: Eighteen Osmania University students were arrested on Saturday after two groups clashed over the arrest of Jawaharlal Nehru University students’ union president Kanhaiya Kumar.
Kumar, a member of CPI’s student wing AISF, was arrested in connection with an event against the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. There were allegations that anti-India slogans were raised during the event.
A group of students belonging to Left wing students’ organisations SFI, AISF, PDSU and TVV assembled on Saturday morning in front of the Arts College in Osmania University to burn effigies of the Central government and the BJP as a mark of protest against the arrest of Kumar in Delhi.
However, the protest was disrupted when some students belonging to the ABVP intervened and asked why they were protesting the arrest of an “anti-national" student?
This led to heated arguments and scuffles in which some students suffered minor injuries. Following this the police detained 11 ABVP students and seven Left wing students. They were released later in the day.
