GHMC Budget: Rs 5,550 crore likely for Hyderabad's development
Hyderabad: Around Rs 5550 crore will be spent on the city's development during 2016-2017. The government is yet to give the green signal to the GHMC budget, which has increased by Rs 551 crore with top priority being given sanitation and roads.
In 2015-2016, the budget was Rs 4999 crore. Of the proposed Rs 5,550 crore, Rs 3,818 crore has been earmarked under capital expenditure and Rs 1,732 crore for revenue expenditure.
The main components of capital expenditure are road infrastructure, amenities and services, slum-free Hyderabad, public conveniences, green Hyderabad, environment, heritage, culture and tourism and smart Hyderabad.
Revenue expenditure comprises regular works and the GHMC establishment. Health and sanitation has been given prime importance. Other major components of revenue expenditure are street lighting, city infrastructure maintenance and urban community development.
The main components of GHMC receipts are property tax (the body collected Rs 1,200 crore in the previous year), surcharge on stamp duty, town planning fee (over Rs 600 crore was collected towards building permission) and professional tax.
In 2015-16, the Telangana government had allotted Rs 628 crore to GHMC for schemes like slum-free Hyderabad (Rs 250 crore), Telangana Haritha Haram (Rs 25 crore), improvement of roads (Rs 250 crore), MMRTS (Rs 21 crore), the Charminar Pedestrian Project (Rs 1 crore) etc.
GHMC commissioner Dr B. Janardhan Reddy said, “The budget draft has been sent to the government for approval. Once it is approved the new council will hold its first meeting on the city's budget.”
