Guwahati: In what has been attributed as to be a grand victory of anti-Citizenship Bill lobby of northeast, the Citizenship Amendment Bill on Wednesday failed to find passage of Rajya Sabha, which adjourned sine die following repeated interruption of opposition.
As soon as the news reached the northeast, the students body, civil society groups and political parties in Assam erupted in celebrations claiming it to be a victory of northeast people.
However, Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said this could not be a considered victory of the state’s people by any standard and his party will remain committed for the issue.
He categorically said that if CAB was not in place then by 2022, Assam would be controlled by Bangladeshi Muslims.
It is significant that Bills introduced in the Rajya Sabha and pending there do not lapse with the dissolution of the Lok Sabha. But the Bills passed by the Lok Sabha and pending in the Rajya Sabha lapse.
