Inter-caste marriages on the rise
Nizamabad: In a surprise move, a few families of ‘forward-thinking’ communities volunteered for inter-caste marriages with socially and economically backward families. The trend is on the rise in north Telangana districts for the last few days.
Especially, grooms from Arya Vysya community have been accepting brides from other castes in erstwhile Nizamabad, Adilabad and Karimnagar districts.
Reportedly, around 50 inter- caste marriages were conducted in recent times on a grand scale. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Nalla Chandrasekhar Gupta of Morthad confirmed that they had accepted a girl from Nayi Brahmin (barber) community in Kadem mandal of erstwhile Adilabad district recently. “We performed the marriage for our cousin on a grand scale at Metpally recently,” he said. Replying to a question, he opined that community elders are also welcoming the inter-caste marriages now.
There are multiple reasons for inter-caste marriages in north Telangana districts. First, the number of girls has dwindled in several forward communities. The parents of the prospective brides are looking for wealthy and highly educated families for marriage proposals. As a result, the youth from economically average families are unable to get marriage proposals.
There are no suitable marriage proposals forthcoming for youth who have completed 30 years of age. So the number of “Pelli kaani Prasad” (forced bachelors) is increasing in several communities. In this context, the youth and their families have decided to accept marriage proposals from other communities. Breaking centuries-old traditions, Arya Vysyas are coming forward to accept inter-caste marriage proposals.
The marriage bureaus and brokers are also looking for matches for inter caste marriages. Instead of love marriages, the trend of inter-caste arranged marriages have turned into a hot practice in rural areas.
