Nod for jallikattu variant sought: Madurai bench HC notice to Centre
Madurai: Villagers from Sivaganga district on Thursday approached the Madurai bench of the Madras High court seeking to hold Manjuvirattu (a form of bull embracing sport) during the village temple festival scheduled on July 16.
As the district collector declined permission for conducting the traditional event for Manjuvirattu festival organised as part of temple festival Mandhakudipatty village on the ground that the Tamil Nadu Government had issued orders for holding the event only from the months of Janurary to May of a calendar year, the villa-gers approached the court for remedy today.
The petitioner A Aavudayappan Servai from the village requested the court to issue directions declaring that the words “from the months of January to May of the Calendar Year in Clause “dd” of a section 2 of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Tamil Nadu Amendment) Act 2017 as illegal and arbitrary in respect to conduct of Manjuvirattu festival. The petitioner further requested subsequently to amend the words to ‘all the months of calendar years’ to conduct their traditional events through out the year.
