Overflowing Garbage Dumps in Hyderabad Trigger Health Concerns and Foul Odor

Hyderabad: Hundreds of overflowing garbage dumps all over the city not only spread a foul smell but are also places were diseases are cropping up, opined many experts. Residential and commercial establishments produce 6,000 metric tons of garbage.

One still find garbage in localities and on the road. People are falling sick because of this. The situation is worse in Mehdipatnam, Shaikpet, Goshamahal, Sitaphalmandi, Chikkadpally, Padmaraonagar, Musheerabad, Narayanguda, Malkajgiri, Malakpet, Santoshnagar, Attapur and Towlicowki.

A GHMC official said that there is a shortage of sanitation staff and garbage collection vehicles compared to the city’s rapid growth and arrival of migrants.

Dr Ranjith, deputy director veterinary, LB Nagar zone, said, “Stray dogs and rats thrive on garbage dumps. Mosquitoes spread dengue and malaria while rats and dogs spread bronchial and dermatological ailments,” he said.

The garbage dumps cause stagnant water where mosquitoes breed.

Mohammed Masi Uddin, a resident of Attapur, “There is a dump of garbage in many areas in this locality. Garbage collector staff, who are supposed to come every day are now visiting once every three days. People are forced to throw the garbage outside.”

Bala Bai, senior citizen, resident of Shantinagar, Jiyaguda, said, “There is a school here, people come and throw garbage. Moreover, dogs are moving around. We tell people not to throw things around but they do.”

Sandeep Kumar, resident of Golnaka, said, “the civic authorities used to have plastic garbage boxes in several localities but people don’t use them.”
