Jaggery turns sour as vigil increases
ADILABAD: Jaggery has turned sour after the excise department focused on its illegal sale as it is the primary ingredient in brewing gudumba.
The Telangana government, which is determined to make the state gudumba-free, is trying to fix the problem by keeping a strict vigil on sale of jaggery and its illegal stocking.
In its endeavour to make the state gudumba-free, the state government even designed a rehabilitation package for the families which stopped brewing gudumba in the state. The officials distributed sheep to selected families which have given up brewing gudumba.
Police intensified raids on provision shops and seized jaggery stocked up illegally, apart from adulterated food items. It has been found that sale of adulterated food items is also rampant in towns and interior areas, leading to several health problems. Some tribal families are exclusively involved in brewing gudumba using black jaggery.
