Nipah: Dental student tests negative, three active cases in Kerala

The condition of the nine-year-old boy who had contracted Nipah infection continues to be critical at a hospital in Kozhikode

Thiruvananthapuram: The Nipah test result of a dental student who sought treatment at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital has been found to be negative.

The test was carried out at the Institute of Advanced Virology near Thiruvananthapuram. The samples tested at the lab confirmed that there was no presence of Nipah virus.

The condition of the nine-year-old boy who had contracted Nipah infection continues to be critical at a hospital in Kozhikode. He is currently on ventilator support.

The state government is making all efforts to save the boy including procurement of mono clonal antibody which is available with the ICMR.

Meanwhile, Nipah virus has been confirmed in the fifth person in the state with a health worker in the Kozhikode district testing positive for the virus. The samples of two healthcare workers from the district were sent for testing at the NIV Pune. One of the samples was found positive while the other was negative. At the moment Kerala has three active cases of Nipah and all are in Kozhikode district.

The district health authorities aid the contact list of infected people has gone up to 790. Steps have been taken to trace the people who are on the contact list. Health authorities have also initiated a field survey in the district.
