Vijayawada: 'Acharya Nagarjuna University' student delivers baby in campus
Vijayawada: A 20-year girl student delivered a baby in the Acharya Nagarjuna University (ANU) and the incident came to light on Thursday.
The girl is a first-year post-graduate student who studies Human Resource and stays in the hostel.
According to sources, the girl was suffering from excruciating pain on December 11 and ANU officials took her to the hospital. Doctors found that she was seven months pregnant and was having labour pain.
The girl then gave birth to a baby on the intervening night of December 11 and 12. ANU officials were shocked over the incident and had kept it a secret.
ANU vice-chancellor Prof A. Rajendra Prasad said that the incident came to light on Wednesday and her parents were informed. He said that the girl did not reveal the person’s name who is responsible for her pregnancy.
He said that she was complaining to hostellers and classmates about having abdomen pains for the past few months and was taking treatment at Guntur whenever she went home. He said that a doctor is available in the ANU but the girl never consulted her. Mr Prasad added that the parents of the girl student came to the hospital and were willing to take the girl and infant with them to their house and did not lodge a complaint.
Mr Prasad said that round-the-clock security and surveillance was present in the hostels and no student would be allowed to go out after 7 pm. He added that ANU officials are conducting an inquiry and stated that action would be taken if the girl lodges a complaint.
