Nellore: Disaster management plan on the anvil
Nellore: Inputs are being collected from all concerned for preparing the district and city disaster management plan of Nellore in association with Ahmadabad (Gujarat) based All India Disaster Mitigation Institute. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who was witness to the flood damage to Nellore city and even the National Highway during heavy rains of November 2015, has picked the Disaster Mitigation Institute to prepare a comprehensive disaster management plan for the city and district, sources said.
The plan is meant to deal with all disasters, including cyclones, floods and earthquakes. As part of the exercise, identification of vulnerable areas based on previous history is under progress. Standards operating procedures are being devised for preparedness before the disaster and response after the calamity after thorough analysis of the hazards. A District Disaster Management Plan prepared by then collector M. Janaki and joint collector A. Md. Imtiaz is coming handy to prepare the comprehensive plan for the district, which of late has been prone to cyclones, floods and earthquakes of late.
Officials said that the focus of the plan will be on promoting a practice of community based Disaster Risk Reduction through building capacities of multiple humanitarian stakeholders in all stages of disaster risk reduction, response and recovery. Mr Imtiaz said the government intends to make use of UNDP funds to build infrastructure for disaster mitigation and management.
