Traffic reforms at Aluva in peril
Kochi: The traffic reforms enforced in congested Aluva Town for the last over 15 months may be withdrawn in the wake of stiff opposition from various quarters, especially traders.
A high-level meet chaired by Aluva MLA Anwar Sadath the other day had decided to seek withdrawal of circular traffic movement system and a letter in this regard was handed over to the Aluva superintendent of police Rahul R. Nair.
The one-way traffic system was introduced by the traffic police in November 2017.
However, police sources wanted the Regulatory Committee to take a decision. “The one-way system was implemented through such a mechanism to resolve acute traffic congestion. Any change should be made through the committee itself,” said a senior traffic police official.
As per the regulation, the vehicles coming from Thottakkattukara side were redirected to enter the town through Bypass-Bank Junction-Pump Junction-Railway Square and KSRTC Bus stand and exit the town through THQ Junction-Karathode Junction. The vehicles going to Angamaly side must take the route under the Market Bridge, and vehicles going to Erna-kulam must take the Pulinchodu road.
However, following opposition of traders, who conducted numerous strikes, a relaxation was given for two and three-wheelers.
“The one-way traffic reform meant customers couldn’t park their vehicles and shop. This resulted in losses for traders. Further, the floods have affected most of them. Hence we sought lifting of the modified traffic arrangements. Also, a lucky draw campaign titled ‘Vyaparolsavom-2019’ will be held to help the traders’ community,” said Aluva chairperson Lissy Abraham.
