Kannur Corporation gets own logo

The emblem was designed by noted logo designer Shibin K.K.

KANNUR: Almost five months after its creation, Kannur Municipal Corporation has got its own emblem which represents the rich cultural heritage the region possesses and also its handloom industry. The emblem was designed by noted logo designer Shibin K.K who had recently won the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) award for designing its World Environment Day logo. The logo, unanimously approved by the Corporation Council, will be released during a public function soon.

The square shaped logo is modern compared to the conventional logos of civic bodies and consists of red and black colours which represent Theyyam-the popular ritual form and the cultural heritage of the district in general . "The four layers which are connected represent unity and the yarns in the layers represent the handloom industry in Kannur which is known as the ‘Land of Looms’," Shibin, the designer, said.

“I have also added a green square at the centre which represents the environment and the natural resources of Kannur,” said the designer. “I am happy that the logo has been accepted and also proud to design the corporation’s logo of my district,” he added.

A native of Thalassery, Shibin’s logo was selected among the final five of the Rupee design and he also got an opportunity to present it before a panel including experts and eminent designers.

Speaking to DC, Kannur Municipal Corporation Mayor E.P Latha said that the emblem design was excellent and the council had approved it unanimously. “We will soon release the emblem at a function. However we are checking whether the Election code of conduct will be an issue or not,” she added.
