Hyderabad: Schools tell parents to monitor kids' surfing

Circular highlights risks posed by certain websites.

Hyderabad: Schools in the city, waking up to the negative impact of mobile phone use by students, have been sending circulars to parents asking them to monitor their children’s activity on the Internet and mobile devices.

While placing a ban on mobile phones in schools, they are asking parents to keep tabs on their wards at home, too. A circular number 32 of St Ann’s High School, Secunderabad, reads “Social networking sites are becoming very popular among the growing children. These sites might expose them to risks like online bullying, disclosure of personal information, cyber stalking, access to inappropriate content and child abuse.”

The school also asked parents to take note of the kind of words and symbols used by the kids on Whatsapp, Facebook and other sites and to be aware and secure.

Other schools such as Delhi Public School are also asking parents to give internet access to kids only under supervision.

The Crime Investi-gation Department of Telangana State is also conducting conferences on safety against online child sexual abuse. CID Additional DG Dr Soumya Mishra said, “There has been a rise in online crimes against children due to increase in use of Internet and cell phones by them.”
