Telangana: 36,000 sop cheques to be reprinted

Reprinting of 36,000 cheques will cause a loss of over Rs 50 lakh to state exchequer.

Hyderabad: Large-scale errors have been detected on the cheques to be distributed to farmers from April 19 to provide Rs 4,000 per acre financial assistance under the Rythu Bandhu scheme.

Over 23 lakh cheques to distribute Rs 1,630 crore have already been printed and handed over to the agriculture department for disbursement.

Officials took up verification of cheques which revealed errors on nearly 36,000 cheques.

Spelling mistakes pertaining to names of farmers, places, cheques issued in the name of Gods, irrigation projects, etc, were detected exposing the shoddy work that was done in the recent land records purification drive.

The cheques were printed as per the data based on purified revenue land records. On some cheques even the year — 2018 — was wrongly printed as 2081. These cheques were cancelled and sent for reprinting.

The government is spending Rs 140 to print each cheque and order has been placed for 60 lakh cheques. Reprinting of 36,000 cheques will cause loss of over Rs 50 lakh to the state exchequer.

Temples across the state own thousands of acres and government registered these lands in the names of presiding deities to prevent illegal transactions of these lands.

Subsequent state governments over the years acquired lakhs of acres for construction of irrigation projects. These lands were registered on the name of irrigation projects.

However, the revenue department ignored deleting the data of such lands existing in the name of Gods and irrigation projects.
