Centre bans 3 Karnataka medical colleges

The ministry has also asked the Medical Council of India (MCI) to encash bank guarantees of Rs 2 crore each deposited by the colleges.

Bengaluru: Three medical colleges from the state have been barred from admitting students for the academic years 2017-18 and 2018-19. Akash Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, Devanahalli, Bengaluru, Sambhram Institute of Medical Science & Research, KGF and Kanachur Institute of Medical Sciences, Mangaluru, have been ordered by the Union Ministry for Health and family Welfare not to admit students till their permissions are renewed.

The ministry has also asked the Medical Council of India (MCI) to encash bank guarantees of Rs 2 crore each deposited by the colleges.

“You are, therefore, directed not to admit students in the MBBS course in the academic years 2017-18 & 2018-19 at your college. Thereafter, the next batch of students shall be admitted in the college only after obtaining permission of the Central Government for renewal,” a communication from the ministry states.

“Admissions made in violation of the above directives will be treated as irregular and action will be initiated under the IMC Act & Regulations made there under,” warns the communication from Mr D.V.K. Rao, Undersecretary, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.

The ministry had given conditional permission for establishment of colleges with 150 seats each, last year. However, the ministry has revoked its permission on the basis of recommendations from the MCI.

When DC contacted Akash Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, Devanahalli, there was no response. DC also tried to contact Mr Sasi Kumar, who is the co-ordinator at Sambhram Institute of Medical Science & Research. He refused to answer any query and said that we should get in touch with the Dean for any comment. But the dean was unavailable for comment.
