Sleep-deprived citizens demand regular power
Hyderabad: Apart from the heat and humidity, unannounced power cuts in different pockets of the city on Friday irked a large number of residents.
Nagaram, Manikonda, Tolichowki, Kondapur, Alkapur, and Bolaram were affected severely by power cuts.
Residents alleged that the frequent power cuts have been depriving them of quality sleep.
“Electricity officials have neither responded to one of our countless phone calls nor done anything about the complaints raised on the app so far,” a resident said.
“Despite the timely payment of electricity bills, we suffer power cuts almost every night. The electricity board has turned a blind eye to our concerns,” said Jubilee Hills resident Gayathri.
Another resident alleged that the voltage fluctuations post-restoration of power threatened the safety of electronic appliances.
“Transformer issues during thunderstorms leave us without power for up to 10 hours. The trees that fall on electricity lines further disturb the distribution network. Frequent fluctuations post-restoration can damage appliances like refrigerators, televisions, etc,” he said.
Residents from different parts of the city took to social media to complain about the power cuts.
“No electricity in the township since four hours,” Alkapur Township resident Amanchi Jyothi tweeted.
“Nobody at the board ever even receives our phone calls, even during times of severe distress such as now,” Mr Kishore from Alkapur posted.
A senior official with the Southern Distribution Company said, “The untimely rains and thunderstorms disrupted our distribution network and damaged our transformers.
“The department has taken up restoration work even at substations as a result of which residents have been suffering short but frequent power cuts. The department in collaboration with the GHMC has taken up the job of pruning the trees because of which power is switched off. Residents are requested to approach the regional board office to report complaints.”
