Hemavathy's record: Dam full in Mid-July for first time
Hassan: The Hemavathy reservoir across the Hemavathy at Gorur in Hassan is full normally either in August or September, but copious rain in its catchment areas of Sakleshpur and Mudigere bringing in heavy inflows, the reservoir is to its brim in mid-July itself, prompting officials to release excess water downstream to reach Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) in Mandya.
The previous record of dam filling up fast was in 2013 when water was released from it on July 26, 2013. But this year, it has filled up much faster and water was released on July 14, officials said. When the dam work was completed in 1983, the reservoir was full, but it had taken a rather long time and water was released only on November 7. In 2005, it was delayed further and surplus water was released on November 11. In 2010, water was released on November 22. On Saturday, the water level at the dam stood at 2919.37 ft, while the maximum is 2922 ft. 15,000 cusecs was released into the river. 2,200 cusecs was released into Left Bank Canal, 200 cusecs into Right Bank Canal and 725 cusecs into Right Bank Upper Canal.
