Drive to clean Payyambalam
KOZHIKODE: Inspired by the massive cleaning programme initiated at Canoly Canal in Kozhikode, a group of volunteers representing various non- profitable organisations have come up with a project named ‘Clean Payyambalam’.
The initiative aims at cleaning the entire beach, known as one of the major tourism destinations in North Kerala and declaring it as a plastic-free zone.
The ten days long project will kick start from September 16 and Kannur Corporation Deputy Mayor P.K. Rakesh will inaugurate the cleaning drive. The master plan of the project is developed by Annapoorna Charitable Trust and NaVA Bharath IAS Academy in association with Kannur District Tourism Promotion Council.
North Malabar Chamber of Commerce former president Mahesh Chan-dra is heading the initiative and Annapoorna Charitable Trust general secretary Joffin James is the Convener, Government Brennan College professor Falgunan is the organising secretary and Shamim Punathil is the chief coordinator.
“The cleaning drive will be successful only when we have more and more volunteers actively participating and hence we have asked all the NSS and NCC units of schools and colleges to be part of our initiative”, said Joffin James, the convener of the drive.
“In just few days we will be able to replenish the beauty of the beach and create an eco friendly atmosphere here by clearing out all the plastic waste,” he added.
Residents association and the members of Vyapara Vyavasaya Ekopana Samathi were also called in to ensure their participation. In connection to the drive a painting competition will be organised with environmentas the theme.
