Govt should step in to improve functioning of children's home: CK Prakash

Though inmates allege mental torture, the caretaker and the wardens have no control over the children.

Kochi: Following the suicide attempt threat made by 18 inmates at Children's home in Kakkanad, the district administration has stressed the need for immediate and effective government intervention to improve the Home’s functioning.

Talking to DC, Additional District Magistrate C.K. Prakash said that allegations raised by the inmates are not completely true.

“The Revenue officials have limitations in addressing their issue though the demands put forward by the inmates would be favourably considered. It is a fact that all inmates are from economically and socially deprived and disturbed families. Though we can provide them minimum facilities, no steps can be taken which is in violation of the Juvenile Justice Act. Though they wanted to go home, their immediate blood relatives are not ready to take them,” he said.

Of the total 86 inmates, 54 children are continuing studies by staying in other hostels. “If the 32 inmates want to pursue studies, we will provide facilities.”

Though inmates allege mental torture, the caretaker and the wardens have no control over the children.

“Most of the inmates are smart, intelligent and who can excel in studies if they get proper guidance. A comprehensive project to revamp the Home with recreational facilities, more buildings, and other facilities is what is needed,” he observed.
