Chennai: KTC (Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur and Chennai) belt has been experiencing short spells of rain since Sunday. The low-pressure area over Bay of Bengal that strengthened on Monday bringing widespread rains in Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Nagapattinam and parts of Madurai.
Constant downpour was experienced in North Chennai and suburban areas, bringing around 25.9 mm of rainfall recorded till 08.30 am on Tuesday. Nungambakkam received around 29.9 mm of rainfall, while Meenambakkam registered 16.1 mm of rainfall till 08.30 am on Tuesday.
Temperatures in the city drooped down to minimum of 26.1 degree and maximum of 26.8 degree Celsius.
Rains disrupted travel for office-goers due to traffic snarls in various localities in the city and suburbs including parts of Tambaram, Guindy, Madipakkam, Velachery and Perambur.
Rail and flight operations functioned normally without any major delay in train services on suburban as well as outstation network. However, power fluctuations did not affect many areas in the city except for a few localities including Vyasarpadi, Madipakkam and Velachery.
As per the Regional Meteorological Centre, rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at a few places over North Coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and at isolated places over North interior and South Tamil Nadu in next 24 hours.
Widespread rains at isolated places over Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts of North Coastal Tamil Nadu are expected till Wednesday, as the low pressure continues near the Chennai coast. However, rains are expected to reduce from Wednesday evening as trough movement is seen to move towards North.
