Commuters bear brunt of nomination processions
Hyderabad: The city witnessed traffic snarls due to election rallies that were conducted for filing nominations by political leaders on Wednesday. The road leading to west Marredpally, the lane between the Cantonment Board and GHMC office was blocked by the GHMC staff.
Huge traffic snarls were reported at Khairatabad. One of the main reasons was that the nomination centre was on the main road and the politicians had brought along a huge contingent of followers.
A group had erected a open dais at Khairatabad Kamma near the railway gate on the side of the main road. Scores of party workers who had gathered on the spot choked the road. Many of the party leaders recklessly parked their vehicles on the main roads leading to traffic chaos.
On Wednesday morning, there were huge traffic jams at Dabeerpura bridge due to a padayatra by political parties.
Mr Mujeeb Khan, a social activist from the Old City said, “On Wednesday many of the MIM candidates were going to file their papers at their nomination centres. The rally taken out by the TD Malakpet MLA candidate started at 3 pm and continued till 7 pm and caused heavy traffic jams at Chanchalguda crossroads.”
When the DC correspondent visited the spot, it was found that the road was closed and many motorists who wanted to take that road were surprised to see the barricades. They were taking U turns in front of the barricades to travel through another way. Many pedestrians who wanted to reach Marredpally were shocked to see those barricades.
Marredpally traffic police sub-inspector G. Gopal, who was on the spot and guided the commuters, said, “We have even deployed three traffic personnel throughout the day to guide the commuters. Many of them don’t know that this road has been blocked.”
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Secunderabad zonal commissioner C N Raghu Prasad said, “It is the Election Commissioner’s orders that 100-metre area from the nomination centre can be blocked for security reasons. We have done the same. Only three vehicles should be allowed with the party leaders who are coming to file their nominations.”
