Milk storage sees upward surge in Kozhikode

The Dairy development department has spent Rs 25.78 crore for the betterment of the dairy society in two years.

Kozhikode: A 9.8% upward surge has been observed in the milk depository at Kozhikode. Milk depository has hit 1, 07,000 liters per day this financial year which was 98,000 liters last year. The district is witnessing a rise in the milk depository as a part of the government’s program to attain self-sufficiency in dairy production within 2 years, said a release here.

The Dairy development department has spent Rs 25.78 crore for the betterment of the dairy society in two years. As a measure to attain self-sufficiency 820 cows and 377 calves were bought from different states.

Fodder farming was initiated in a newly bought 145 hector field. Rs 2, 61, 01,678 was allotted for the betterment of primary dairy groups and approximately 1,700 cows were distributed to women via triple panchayats as a part of the dairy village program.

The farmers had raised complaint stating that the production costs often went above the profit, several plans have been implemented to curb such problems in the future. Dairy farmer’s welfare pension has been increased from Rs 600 to Rs 1,100.
