Eminent singer Anup Ghosal dies
Kolkata: Famous playback singer and former Trinamul Congress MLA Anup Ghosal, who gave his melodious voice to many eternal numbers of Bengali and Hindi films, passed away on Friday. He was 78 and is survived by two daughters.
Ghoshal had old age related ailments. He was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the city. The noted singer suffered multi-organ failure and died there at around 1.40 pm. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee mourned his death.
In a condolence message, she described Ghoshal’s demise as an “irreparable loss to the world of music.” In the 2011 Assembly Election, the singer won from Uttarpara in Hooghly on a TMC ticket. Five years later, he did not get another chance however and quit politics.
A versatile singer, Ghoshal earned accolades for his skills in Rabindrasangeet and Nazrulgeeti. It was his voice which made the numbers in Satyajit Ray's 'Goopi Gyne Bagha Byne' (The Adventures of Goopy and Bagha, 1969) and 'Hirak Rajar Deshe' (Kingdom of Diamonds, 1980) an all-time hit.
Ghoshal also sang in director Tapan Sinha's film ‘Sagina Mahato’ in 1971. His voice in ‘Tujhse Naraz Nahi Zindagi' in ‘Masoom’ directed by Gulzar made him famous in the country.
