Coimbatore's position better this year
Coimbatore: The Coimbatore corporation gets a better position in Swachh Bharat Mission ranking, when compared to last year. The city has been placed 18th in the current year Swachh Bharat ranking. But the city ranked 196th position last year.
Every day the corporation moves 800 tonnes of waste to Vellalore dump at Coimbatore using 100 lorries. Two private companies are involved in the waste segregation process. So far, Rs 513 crore had been allotted for solid waste management. .
Even though the corporation has achieved a Guinness record by creating awareness among more than 13,000 students, the civic body has failed in solid waste management which pushed the city lagging behind Tiruchy.
“Last year, lack of coordination between corporation officials and Swachh Bharat team led to poor ranking. This year, the corporation formed a team, which held meetings with Swachh Bharat ranking officials and explained to them what the corporation achieved under the cleaning mission. With the help of officials, now we have got a better position in the ranking. We will try to get an even better position next year” said corporation commissioner K. Vijayakarthikeyan.
The five private agencies representatives conducted a survey in Coimbatore in January 2016. They have collected information about the extent of open defecation, solid waste management, waste water treatment, drinking water quality, surface water quality and mortality due to water-borne diseases. This survey was commissioned by the ministry of urban development as required under the National Sanitation Policy of 2008.
