SC: Hold TS Medical Council elections within 3 months

Hyderabad: The Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to stay the elections of the Telangana State Medical Council, directing that the elections for the 13 members be completed within three months.

The court issued the orders while dealing with a special leave petition filed by the Telangana government and the TS Medical Council, which challenged an order by the Telangana High Court to strike down the state government’s decision to reduce the number of elected members from 13 to five.

The state government, with the move, enhanced the number of nominated members, which did not sit right with the medical community. Challenging it, M/s Healthcare Reforms Doctors Association approached the Telangana High Court, complaining that the move was a manoeuvre by the government to take control of the medical council.

In the first week of January, the High Court struck down the state government’s decision and directed it to conduct the elections within three months. Challenging the order, the state government and medical council approached the Supreme Court.
