Cow vigilantes rob cattle from Tamil Nadu officials
KRISHNAGIRI: At least one of the 50 Tharparkar cows transported by the Tamil Nadu Animal Husbandry officials was allegedly robbed by cow vigilantes in Barmer district of Rajasthan.
While the remaining 49 cows are being transported from Jaisalmer in Rajasthan to Tamil Nadu with police protection, the cattle-laden trucks are expected to enter the latter through Maharashtra and Karnataka on Saturday, sources here said.
Protection for the cows have been given after the untoward incident when five trucks loaded with cattle meant for the Chettinadu government livestock farm in Sivagangai district was attacked at Barmer. The attack took place on the National highway, just one km from Sadar police station.
Over 50 people had stopped the vehicles and began attacking them. They were not convinced despite officials showing legal papers to transport the animals.
The officials, who were subjected to brutal violence said, "two animals jumped out of the truck and went missing in a bid to set trucks on fire by the mob after setting free the cattle worth Rs 50 lakh"
A truck was damaged in the incident, in which 50-year-old Balamurugan, a government staff sustained bleeding injury in the skull due to the stone-throwing incident.
Others including a government veterinary doctor N.Aravind Raj, farm assistants R.Karuppiah, P.Arumugam, M.Aandi and K.Arumugam were also beaten up by the vigilantes, sources said.
The timely intervention of the Sadar police saved the government staff, who had been to Rajasthan for purchasing the 'Tharparkar milch breed' animal for the Chettinadu government livestock farm for the project under the National Agriculture Development Programme to increase the population of the native breed cows including Tharparkar.
