Kerala to meet treatment expenses of UA Khader
Kozhikode: The state government would bear the medical expenses of U.A. Khader, the Burmese born legendary Malayalam writer.
On a direction from chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, ministers A.K. Saseendran and T.P. Ramakrishnan met the ailing writer at his home at Pokkunnu on the suburbs of the city.
Mr Khader had undergone surgery for respiratory issues and knee fixing. His wife was also under treatment recently.
Later addressing reporters, the ministers said Mr Khader was not in a position to bear the high cost of treatment.
"For the time being the government would take care of it and the rest of the issues would come later," said Mr Ramakrishnan.
"The writer is a pride of Kozhikode as well as the entire state."
Mr Khader told the ministers that though he is physically weak, he would continue to contribute to the literary world.
"Even now I am participating in various programmes in the city," he said.
"The role of a writer is very much significant at this point when divisive forces gather strength in society. I am happy that the state government has recognised me as a writer and also extended its support."
The ministers his 'Aksharam' home by 8. 15 am, and he received them at the patio. Both the ministers queried in detail about his physical conditions, ailments and the ongoing treatment.
